Effects of category-relevance, retention measure, and category-affiliation upon retention of the aging

    Get PDF
The present investigation represents an attempt to further explore several parameters of short-term memory as a function of the relevance of appropriateness of the verbal materials utilized. It is the author\u27s contention that due to changing patterns of interests and experiences accompanying chronological aging, certain types of verbal material vary with respect to their relevance for use with aging populations. In regard to parameters of short-term memory, the present study contains provisions for exploring efficiency of retention as a function of the retention measure; and category•affiliated as opposed to randomly-selected words. A more complete and integrated formulation is presented in the following chapter

The Mass distribution of the Cluster 0957+561 from Gravitational Lensing

Multiply gravitationally lensed objects with known time delays can lead to direct determinations of H0_0 independent of the distance ladder if the mass distribution of the lens is known. Currently, the double QSO 0957+561 is the only lensed object with a precisely known time delay. The largest remaining source of systematic error in the H0_0 determination results from uncertainty in the mass distribution of the lens which is comprised of a massive galaxy (G1) and the cluster in which it resides. We have obtained V-band CCD images from CFHT in order to measure the mass distribution in the cluster from its gravitional distorting effect on the appearance of background galaxes. We use this data to constuct a two-dimensional mass map of the field. A mass peak is detected at the 4.5σ4.5\sigma level, offset from, but consistent with, the position of G1. Simple tests reveal no significant substructure and the mass distribution is consistent with a spherical cluster. The peak in the number density map of bright galaxies is offset from G1 similarly to the mass peak. We constructed an azimuthally averaged mass profile centered on G1 out to 2 \arcmin (400h1400 h^{-1} kpc). It is consistent with an isothermal mass distribution with a small core (r_c \approx 5 \arcsec = 17 h^{-1} kpc). The inferred mass within 1 Mpc is consistent with the dynamical mass estimate but 2σ2\sigma higher than the upper limits from a ROSAT X-ray study. We discuss implications for H0_0 in a future paper.Comment: LaTeX, aas version 4 macros. Calibration error in original led to overestimate of cluster mass. Seven out of twelve figures included. "You can't sell a marae": campus innovation at Massey University

    Get PDF
Te Kupenga o te Mātauranga marae is located on the former Massey University Hokowhitu Campus in Palmerston North and has the distinction of being the first marae built on Crown land. A national hui on Māori Education was held at the Hokowhitu Campus (then Teachers College, not yet Massey University) in 1974 and it was here that Charlie Maitai challenged the then principal Pat Whitwell to build a wharenui on the new campus. That challenge was complete by the end of the 1970s. In 2015 the marae was sold by Massey University to a local developer as part of a wider real estate site package

Improved Parameters and New Lensed Features for Q0957+561 from WFPC2 Imaging

    Get PDF
New HST WFPC2 observations of the lensed double QSO 0957+561 will allow improved constraints on the lens mass distribution and hence will improve the derived value of H0_0. We first present improved optical positions and photometry for the known components of this lens. The optical separation between the A and B quasar images agrees with VLBI data at the 10 mas level, and the optical center of the primary lensing galaxy G1 coincides with the VLBI source G' to within 10 mas. The best previous model for this lens (Grogin and Narayan 1996) is excluded by these data and must be reevaluated. Several new resolved features are found within 10\arcsec of G1, including an apparent fold arc with two bright knots. Several other small galaxies are detected, including two which may be multiple images of each other. We present positions and crude photometry of these objects.Comment: 7 pages including 2 postscript figures, LaTeX, emulateapj style. Gravitational lensing of quasar 0957+561 and the determination of H0

We present results of a deep imaging study of the cluster lensing the double quasar Q0957+561. Using data obtained at KPNO and CFHT we have detected distortions in the lensed blue background galaxy population. From these arclet distortions we have constructed a map of the mass density in the field of the double QSO. We use this map to provide constraints on the mass concentrations responsible for the lensing. Under these constraints in conjunction with mass models and the known time delay between the A and B images we place limits on the value of the Hubble constant. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/87545/2/343_1.pd

Improving Low Power Processor Efficiency with Static Pipelining

    Get PDF
A new generation of mobile applications requires reduced energy consumption without sacrificing execution performance. In this paper, we propose to respond to these conflicting demands with an innovative statically pipelined processor supported by an optimizing compiler. The central idea of the approach is that the control during each cycle for each portion of the processor is explicitly represented in each instruction. Thus the pipelining is in effect statically determined by the compiler. The benefits of this approach include simpler hardware and that it allows the compiler to perform optimizations that are not possible on traditional architectures. The initial results indicate that static pipelining can significantly reduce power consumption without adversely affecting performance

Detection of Lens Candidates for the Double QSO Q2345+007

Luminous objects associated with the 7.06\arcsec\ separation double quasar Q2345+007 have, until now, escaped detection. In this letter we present the results of the deepest known imaging of the region surrounding the quasar. The total exposure times were 47600 seconds in Bj_j (101 frames) and 32160 seconds in R (82 frames). The frames came from CFHT, CTIO, and KPNO. We detect a Bj_j = 25.0 mag galaxy (Bj_j -- R = 0.5 mag) in close proximity to the fainter QSO image, possibly at z=1.49z = 1.49 given by several absorption features in the QSO spectra. Furthermore, there is a 2.9σ\sigma enhancement in the number density of faint galaxies (2424 \le Bj_j 28\le 28, Bj_j- R 1.5 \le 1.5) near the quasar and another 3.1σ\sigma enhancement further away. These discoveries support the hypothesis that Q2345+007 is being lensed by one or more distant mass concentrations and may imply that compact ``clusters'' already exist at early epochs. We discuss several lens models for the system and the cosmological implications.Comment: (uuencoded compressed postscript

    BEAT: Bio-Environmental Android Tracking

    Get PDF
Abstract-The popularity of wireless devices has been pushing the envelope for medical applications. These devices, paired with a personal health monitoring framework can enable early detection and increased quality of life of citizen of developed nations. These devices are helping supplement the available disease detection and treatment techniques, as well as increasing the quality of life of the users of the system. BEAT (Bio-Environmental Android Tracking) provides methods for collecting, processing, and archiving ones' daily vital and spatiotemporal statistics using commercially available biologic and environmental sensors. The device analyzes the data and attempts to classify the behavior by using context information from accelerometers, GPS, previous behavior, and user feedback. Algorithms are executed to calculate statistics (e.g. heartbeat variance, time above/below certain thresholds, and flag abnormal readings). Options are available for adjusting thresholds used to issue user and third party alerts automatically. In addition, statistics, previous records, and realtime data, can be displayed to the user or transmitted to a medical professional for analysis. Integration of additional bio-sensors including blood pressure, glucose, and weight will enable the BEAT framework to be a complete personal health monitoring system
